Surface Defect Detection for Metal Parts
Metal parts crack and surface inspection is a surface defect detection application that scans machined and forged automotive metal components for cracks, pits and surface defects immediately after production, before the part leaves the line.
The problem
Hairline cracks on metal parts are difficult for a human inspector to see consistently, especially across a full shift. A cracked part that stays on the line can fail later, sometimes inside a customer's assembly, where the cost of a return is far higher than the cost of catching it at the source.
How it works
TARKO's software analyzes images of each part captured at the inspection point and checks the surface against the crack and defect patterns it has been trained to recognize on the customer's own parts. The detection method itself is proprietary and is not published.
The system is built to run inference locally, without depending on a cloud connection to make a pass or fail decision.
What This Surface Defect Detection Application Catches
- Surface cracks on machined and forged components
- Pitting and porosity visible at the surface
- Surface finish defects that deviate from a known-good reference part
This application is part of TARKO's automotive components work. For a related application on cast metal parts rather than machined or forged parts, see die cast component inspection.
What size of defect can this catch?
The system is built to catch defects down to a sub-millimeter scale. Exact sensitivity depends on the part geometry, surface finish and camera setup, and is confirmed during a feasibility audit for each part family.
Does this slow down the line?
No. Inspection happens in real time as each part passes the camera station, at normal line speed.
What happens when a defect is found?
The system sends a signal to the line's existing automation to divert or flag the part, over the plant's existing network. Ask TARKO directly for details on how this connects to your specific setup.
